Toronto Basement Finishing

(Post Renovation)

We were brought in on this Toronto basement project to take care of the new drywall, painting, flooring, a full 3 piece bathroom, and all new doors + trim throughout.

Given the home being a small bungalow with minimal square footage on the main floor, renovating this basement to essentially double the homes usable living space was a massive improvement from what used to be a dingy basement mainly used for storage purposes.

New drywall was installed over the walls and ceilings to replace most of which was previously moldy or incorrectly installed board.  All joints were then properly mudded, taped, and finished properly before painting.  A white colored paint was chosen to be applied throughout the basement in order to maximize the feeling of a bright and airy space, improving the feeling of size in the basement given the lower ceiling height.

A 7 inch wide, Natural oak colored vinyl plank flooring was installed as the flooring choice throughout the basement common areas, with 12" x 24" luxury vinyl tile being chosen for the bathroom and laundry room areas.  Vinyl plank flooring such as this is great for any basement as it can be laid directly over concrete, and due to its flexible composition, can also conform to any slope irregularities that the basement slab may have.  This basement concrete slab in particular was extremely out of level due to the age of the home, and lack of importance given to creating a level slab at the time the house was constructed.  A few areas of this basement slab were needed to be brought up by heights of up to 3 inches in order to create a surface that was capable of being level enough to install flooring over top, but in the end it was well worth the extra time put in to ensure the flooring installation would never fail.

New doors, door casing, baseboard, and window casing were installed throughout this basement to provide the proper millwork finishes for an inviting space.  3 panel, solid would core doors were used for all the entry ways. Custom millwork solutions had to be performed on-site in order to make the sliding double door closet configurations work due to the lack of ceiling height above each door.  A sliding barn door configuration was chosen for the bathroom entry due to the floor slope within the bathroom not allowing an inward swinging door, and the bulkhead within the kitchenette area making an outward swinging door difficult as well.  Although tedious, these door configurations proved to be excellent choices for they're respective areas, and allow all the door profiles within the basement to still be matching.

In what is likely the biggest addition to this basement for raising the value of the house as a whole, and 3 piece bathroom now creates a second full bathroom within the home for much added convenience.  With the main floor already featuring a tub-shower, a neo-angle walk in shower configuration was chosen for the basement.  This neo angle shower is a great shape for smaller bathrooms like this one to allow for enough room to feature a sizable vanity and toilet space to either side of the shower enclosure.  Featuring 12" x 24" Calcatta porcelain tile and a recessed shelf niche, this shower brings a simple modern flair to the room.
